Flinders University: Australian Seafood CRC/Simplot Australia Pty Ltd: Characterisation of selected fish processing co-products and development of novel integrated bioprocesses for value-added food and non-food bioproducts
External Closing Date: 19-01-2009
The research project shall explore and understand the potential of value-added components from Australian Fish Processing Co-products and By-catches. These value-added components include primary components (proteins, lipids, polysaccharides and micronutrients from the co-products materials), and their secondary and tertiary derived products through bio- and chemo-conversion. The outcomes of this project include the development of novel commercial ready process technologies for the production of value-added products. The project will contribute to Australian Seafood CRC Program 1B – Value Chain profitability. For further information please contact: A/Prof Wei Zhang, Marine Bioproducts and Bioprocessing Laboratory, Department of Medical Biotechnology, Flinders University, GPO Box 2100, Adelaide, SA, Australia 5001; phone: (08) 8204 5053, Fax: (08) 8204 4010, email: Wei.Zhang@flinders.edu.au; or email: Raymond.Tham@flinders.edu.au Application kits can be downloaded from the scholarships website or can be obtained from the Higher Degree Administration and Scholarships Office. Flinders University: Australian Seafood CRC: Processing of Sea Cucumber viscera for bioactive compounds
Internal Closing Date: 19-01-2009
The project aims to identify and characterise bioactive compounds from a marine organism prevalent in Australian waters and to address the critical area of deriving products of high value from products of the seafood processing industry that are currently considered to be of no value or an additional cost burden. It has the potential of converting these negative cost products to income generators and move the industry to be contributors to the lucrative functional food market. This can be achieved through the identification of novel bioactives and the development of novel technology for seafood processing co-products such as sea cucumber viscera. This project will develop extraction and fractionation protocols to obtain extracts and fractions of various polarity and molecular weights from sea cucumber viscera and test these
extracts and hydrolysates for bioactivities using established chemical analyses and biological assays. For further information please contact: Prof Chris Franco, Head, Department of Medical Biotechnology, School of Medicine, Flinders University, Adelaide, SA 5001 ph: (08) 7221 8554, Fax: (08) 7221 8555, email: chris.franco@flinders.edu.au Application kits can be downloaded from the scholarships website or can be obtained from the Higher Degree Administration and Scholarships Office. Intending applicants should enclose with their application, a covering letter indicating that they wish to be considered for this scholarship, a document addressing the selection criteria and a CV including the names of at least two referees.
